Ford Territory Turbo

Ford had an impressively large presence at the 2006 Melbourne Motor Show (rivalled perhaps only by Toyota), showing off its new Focus XR5, special edition utes, a new Fiesta Zetec and plenty more.

But the highlight of the Blue Oval's exhibit had to be the new Territory Turbo, benefiting from the marque's impressive 245kW (328hp) turbocharged 4.0-litre engine, and getting a few new touches inside and out.

Sporting a bold hood scoop and twin exhaust pipes, the new Territory Turbo is one of the worst-kept secrets in the Ford camp, yet is still an undeniably exciting development.

"The turbo Territory project provided us with many challenges, and the end result is a world class vehicle," said Trevor Worthington, the vice president of product development, who explained that it wasn't simply a case of bolting the XR6 Turbo's motor into a Territory engine compartment.

"It was an extensive engineering project that involved a lot more work than simply slotting an engine into a space under the bonnet. Our engineers undertook a full development program to ensure the total vehicle outcome based around the iconic turbo engine was optimised."

As Ford explains, the development program has resulted in unique engine and transmission calibrations, a unique DSC calibration, a new exhaust system plus new 18-inch alloy wheels and 235/55 R18 tyres on both models (Territory Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo). Extensive thermal testing and subsequent engine modifications involving heating and cooling performance comprised a large proportion of the testing procedure.

"The DSC calibration has been optimised to work in conjunction with the 245kW turbo engine, and the all-wheel-drive system with the 18-inch wheels and tyres," added Mr Worthington.

"Ford's popular 4.0-litre DOHC DIVCT 6-cylinder turbo engine powers this new model, and it was vital we had the very best 6-speed automatic transmission available to ensure that it maintained a world class pedigree," said Mr Worthington. "With 245kW and 480Nm available, there was only one transmission we seriously considered – the proven ZF 6HP26."

The two turbo Territory models feature a unique version of the ZF 6HP26 transmission, which has been specially designed for the turbo all-wheel-drive application. A unique transmission calibration makes optimum use of the turbo engine's power and torque in both on and off road driving conditions. The transmission oil cooler has also been upgraded, maintaining a 2300kg maximum towing capacity.

Ford says that the turbo Territory also features upgraded front brakes, complete with a performance caliper and increased rotor size. This provides reliable and stable brake performance, and increased thermal capacity, while the revised caliper package offers improved pedal feel and modulation of pedal pressure under all braking events.

The new model will be offered in two all-wheel-drive specification levels – Territory Turbo, and the more luxuriously appointed Territory Ghia Turbo. "Territory Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo build on the many fine attributes inherent in the original Territory and then adds additional performance," said Ford Australia President, Tom Gorman. The idea of a turbocharged, high performance SUV will no doubt be a boon for the company, as interest in performance-oriented SUVs continues to rise.

Territory Turbo offers much in the way of standard features, including:

245kW Turbo engine
Exterior visual enhancements including bonnet scoop and dual exhaust outlets
ZF Six Speed Automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift (SSS)
4-way power driver seat
All-wheel-drive capability
18-inch alloy wheels
Cruise control
Over thirty storage compartments
Body colour bumpers
Turbo badge

Territory Ghia Turbo offers the same features as found on the Territory Turbo model, but also adds the following as standard:

Colour TFT screen
Reverse Camera, operating in conjunction with a Reverse Sensing System
6-way power driver seat
Side curtain airbags
Premium ICC & audio system
Dual zone climate control
Ghia Turbo badge

"The elegant refined appearance of turbo Territory belies the true potency of this impressive new vehicle," concluded Mr Gorman. Ford says that the turbo Territory range will go on sale in mid 2006, with pricing and further specification related details will be released closer to launch.

In addition to the hoo-ha surrounding the new force-fed Territory SUV, Ford came clean with pricing for its impressive-looking performance Focus, dubbed the XR5 Turbo. Featuring a 2.5-litre inline 5-cylinder engine developing 166kW of power and 320Nm of torque, the new Focus will give Golf GTI buyers an alternative, particularly when it's priced at $36,000, undercutting its rival by almost $4,000. Ford says it should be in Australian dealerships by May.

The Blue Oval's Australian President, Tom Gorman, announced the pricing yesterday at the Melbourne International Motor Show: "Value for money is a cornerstone of the Ford brand," stated Ford Australia president Tom Gorman, "and the new German-engineered and built Focus XR5 Turbo certainly lives up to that reputation, combining a high performance turbocharged engine, slick 6-speed manual transmission and razor sharp handling for under $36,000.

"This is a very exciting day for Ford Australia, with the red hot Focus XR5 Turbo adding more firepower to an already potent performance vehicle line-up. We all know Focus is a quality product, with superb dynamics borne out of an extensive sports programme via the gruelling World Rally Championship. Our engineers have drawn on that experience and focussed it into a vehicle destined to redefine the term hot hatch.

"Focus XR5 Turbo combines performance with practicality; offering usability and versatility just as its siblings do, with additional power and performance in tribute to its rally-bred origins," Mr Gorman said.

Ford explains that the Focus chassis has been modified and stiffened for the XR5 Turbo as well as being lowered by 25mm. Handling has been refined through stiffening of the front and rear springs and larger diameter anti-roll bars, and the brakes have been boosted to cope with the extra power.

Safety features include a rigid passenger cell, footwell protection, collapsible steering column and pedals, side impact protection door beams and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Passive safety highlights include driver and front passenger airbags, side curtain airbags and pyrotechnic belt pre-tensioners.

Inside, the new Focus XR5 Turbo boasts futuristic-looking Recaro sports seats and a unique additional instrument pod, displaying turbocharger boost pressure (up to 1.2 bar), oil temperature and oil pressure. It also features a Sony premium sound system with 6-stack in-dash CD player and eight speakers.

Outside, the front bumper has been emphasised to give the Focus XR5 Turbo a lowered look incorporating an aggressive inverted-trapezoid lower grille. Flanking the top of the lower grille, fog lamp openings are trimmed in brushed aluminium.

Other features on the Ford exhibit at the 2006 Melbourne Motor Show included a special edition ute, of which just 300 units will be sold - Falcon XR6 Cab Chassis. Due to go on sale in May, Ford says that the positive public reaction to the then concept at the 2005 Sydney Motor Show earmarked it for future production.

The special edition ute is designed to combine the practical capability of a cab chassis with the stylish good looks of the XR, meaning customers do not have to compromise looks for functionality. Ford explains that the ute will be available as standard with half tonne XR sports suspension and 17-inch XR alloy wheels. For those customers requiring a heavier load capacity, a one tonne suspension option with one tonne rated 16-inch alloy wheels is also available at no extra cost.

Power is supplied by Ford's Barra 4.0-litre 6-cylinder engine, which delivers 190kW of power @ 5250rpm and 383Nm of torque @ 2500rpm, and Ford says that pricing and further specification information will be revealed closer to the on sale date.

And if turbocharged SUVs, red hot hatches and special edition utes don't whet your automotive appetite, Ford also unveiled the new-look Fiesta Zetec model, plus its refreshed Escape compact AWD, a new SR Falcon sedan that includes a whopping $7000 worth of extras, new E-gas options on Falcon and much more.

Production Ready Holden VE Sportwagon Unveiled in Melbourne

0 评论

Melbourne is often referred to as Australia’s mini Detroit. Australia’s two biggest car manufacturers Holden and Ford, consider the Melbourne area as their home with various production, design and test and development facilities dotted about the area. Toyota also has a large production facility there so it comes as no surprise that the Melbourne International Motor Show is considered to be the one.

Not to be outdone by Ford’s recently revealed FG Ford Falcon, Holden have used Melbourne International Motor Show to launch the wagon/estate version of their highly acclaimed Commodore sedan. Holden refer to the new body-style as the “Sportwagon”. The Sportwagon can be equipped with a range of engines including a 3.6L V6 and a 6.0L V8. Engine outputs range from a 180kW (240hp) to the mighty 6.0L V8 which offers 270kW (360hp) and can be equipped with a 4 speed, 5 speed or 6 speed automatic transmission depending on engine option. There is also a 6 speed manual option on the more performance orientated V8 model.

As is often the case with modern car designs, the wagon variant is arguably a more cohesive design than the sedan body-style. Holden will be hoping that they steal some of Fords thunder and also attract some of Ford’s customers away from the very popular Ford Territory SUV.

Mercedes Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid Concept

0 评论

True-Blue-Solutions

Maybe not the biggest of surprises for the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes is systematically equipping its range with BlueTec Hybrid engines, but the Mercedes Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid is definitely another step forward in regards to SUVs and pollution.

Mercedes will make the new GLK SUV available with their 2.2 liter four-cylinder CDI diesel engine in combination with a hybrid module. Power should be in the region of 165 kW / 224 hp with 560 Nm of torque, resulting in a top speed of 215 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds while consuming just 5.9 liters per 100 km. CO2 emissions are also setting a new standard in the segment with 157 grams per kilometer, meeting the American BIN5 and European EU6 standards.

"With the refinement, driving pleasure, outstanding economy and effective environmental friendliness that is typical of our brand, the VISION GLK BLUETEC HYBRID ideally represents our ideas on future model generations in the world of SUVs", says Dr Thomas Weber.

Press Release

The grand rehearsal at the beginning of this year already made heads turn, when the striking Vision GLK entered the SUV stage and was celebrated as a compact character actor marking a new design approach in this vehicle class. At the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is going a step further and adding the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID to the line-up. This study illustrates the possibilities of the "TrueBlueSolutions" strategy in the compact SUV segment, true to the guiding Mercedes-Benz theme of producing the world’s most efficient and clean drive systems. The Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID achieved this goal by combining the new BLUETEC four-cylinder diesel engine generation with a hybrid module. This combination generates an overall output of 165 kW/224 hp, and a torque of 560 Nm. Superior performance can be taken as read in view of these figures. And yet the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID returns a fuel consumption of only 5.9 l per 100 km.

With its TrueBlueSolutions strategy, Mercedes-Benz is preparing the way for the introduction of the world’s most economical and clean vehicles. As in the case of the VISION GLK BLUETEC HYBRID, ultra-modern and efficient diesel engines with innovative BLUETEC emissions control, hybrid modules and intelligent energy management are among the centrepieces of this trailblazing generation of drive systems. The study for this compact characterful SUV has a combined output of 165 kW/224 hp and generates a combined torque of 560 newton metres, the world’s highest in this class. This enables the VISION GLK BLUETEC HYBRID to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds; its maximum speed is 215 km/h. Despite these performance figures, this multi-talented newcomer consumes an average of only 5.9 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, and achieves the world’s lowest CO2 emissions in the SUV segment, with 157 grams per kilometre.

In conjunction with highly efficient BLUETEC emissions control and AdBlue injection, the GLK BLUETEC HYBRID meets the world’s most stringent exhaust emission limits, such as the American BIN5 and the European EU6 standards.

"With the refinement, driving pleasure, outstanding economy and effective environmental friendliness that is typical of our brand, the VISION GLK BLUETEC HYBRID ideally represents our ideas on future model generations in the world of SUVs", says Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Corporate Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
Mixed double: state-of-the-art BLUETEC engine and hybrid module

In the hybrid drivetrain, a completely new four-cylinder CDI diesel unit with a displacement of 2.2 litres acts as the internal combustion engine. In terms of exhaust emissions technology, thanks to the latest BLUETEC technology with AdBlue injection, this diesel engine is already among the world’s very cleanest power units. The technical highlights of this extremely compact and refined CDI unit with a geared camshaft drive mounted on the flywheel side include fourth-generation common-rail direct injection with an injection pressure of 2000 bar, innovative piezoelectric injectors and a two-stage turbocharger system. The compact hybrid module - a disc-shaped electric motor between the CDI engine and the automatic transmission - improves both the environmental compatibility and the effectiveness of the drive system. The electric motor acts as both a generator and starter, and performs convincingly in two important respects: firstly it contributes decisively to fuel economy, and secondly it significantly enhances driving pleasure by virtue of the so-called boost effect.

The electric motor backs up the internal combustion engine during the fuel-intensive acceleration phase by contributing its maximum torque of 160 newton metres. As a result the occupants experience an effortless rush of power right from the start. In addition the system features a comfortable start-stop function which switches the engine off in certain circumstances - for example when the car is stopped at traffic lights.

The driver only needs to operate the accelerator in order to set off again. As the engine starts within milliseconds, the VISION GLK moves off with no delay. This direct starting also helps to minimise emissions and fuel consumption.

When it comes to braking, the procedures are reversed: the electric motor acts as a generator, feeding the electrical energy obtained by what is known as the "recuperation" process into an efficient yet compact lithium-ion battery. This energy can be retrieved when needed - for the next "boost" phase, for example. All these processes take place fully automatically, thanks to intelligent drive management.
Striking body design counters stylistic uniformity

With the VISION GLK BLUETEC HYBRID, a distinctive character is entering the SUV stage whose special appeal lies in a combination of the four-square original design of the legendary G-Class and the typical design features of today’s Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Crisp lines and large taut body surfaces come together with the bodyshell characteristics of practical off-roaders, such as short overhangs, an upright front end, slim A-pillars, a steep windscreen and tight roof contours. For the first time, this body design enables typical off-roader advantages to be transferred to the more road-oriented, compact SUV class. An excellent view of the vehicle body and good all-round visibility go together with the raised seating position to enhance day-to-day suitability and ensure relaxed driving even in dense city traffic. The appealing design concept is reinforced by the special "alubeam blue" paint finish, whose incomparable depth further underlines the sporty aspects of the bodyshell design. Specially produced 20-inch light-alloy wheels and muscular wheel arches enhance the powerful aura of the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID even further.
Interior: High-end atmosphere meets good ergonomics

The comfortable, high-quality interior of the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID excels with a modern interpretation of surface styling, an impressive quality of materials and precise finishing. The dominant feature is the dashboard, which visually extends into the door panels, lending additional width to the generously dimensioned interior. An elegant, central section in brushed aluminium trim covers the entire width and divides the layout into three vertical levels. The upper section of the dashboard is lined in black leather, encompassing the instrument cluster and the fixed COMAND APS central display. The lower area of the interior and the seats accentuate the sporty nature of the study with leather upholstery and linings in a light shade of aquamarine, which echoes the colour effects of the "alubeam blue" exterior paintwork. Dark-blue piped seams provide a visually effective contrast. The driver’s armrest and the COMAND APS controller are located in ergonomically ideal positions.

The occupants are protected by a comprehensive safety concept based on an extremely rigid passenger cell and energy-absorbing deformation zones at the front and rear. In addition to airbags, sidebags and windowbags, the protective features include a driver kneebag and active head restraints.
VISION GLK appointments at the perceived level of the luxury class

This compact concept vehicle has technical features and appointments which are normally the preserve of higher vehicle classes. In addition to the anticipatory safety concept PRE-SAFE and the Intelligent Light System (ILS), these include the infotainment centre COMAND APS with HDD navigation, whose controls follow the tried-and-tested, intuitive operating logic familiar from the S-Class, as well as THERMOTRONIC 3-zone automatic climate control.

The extremely stable bodyshell raises the basic parameters by which comfort is defined to a level which is unprecedented in the compact SUV segment: Both handling stability and vibration/noise comfort are absolutely convincing in all conditions.
AGILITY CONTROL: Safety plus dynamic handling and comfort

The AGILITY CONTROL suspension of the on-road Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID substantially reconciles the conflicting aims of sporty and agile handling on the one hand and comfortable, smooth travel on the other. Thanks to "amplitude-dependent damping", the suspension delivers a soft response during normal travel on moderately contoured roads or unmetalled surfaces. Comfort is maintained even when driving more briskly or during avoiding manoeuvres, as the dampers work harder in this situation to ensure maximum handling stability. At the same time the driver of the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID is assisted by a speed-sensitive steering system. Parking and low-speed manoeuvring are made much easier because full servo assistance is made available. At higher speeds this servo assistance is reduced in the interests of improved handling stability.
Latest addition to the premium SUV segment

Mercedes-Benz has occupied the leading position in the off-road sector since the introduction of the legendary G-Class in 1979. With the first-generation ML-Class, which was launched in 1997, Mercedes-Benz defined the Sports Utility Vehicle in its modern interpretation. Together with the current model, which celebrated its premiere in 2005, sales of this model series are rapidly approaching the one million mark, making it one of the world’s most successful premium SUVs. Since 2006 another SUV from Mercedes-Benz has occupied the pole position in the SUV world - the GL-Class, whose occupants enjoy first-class travel in all circumstances, whether on or off-road.

The Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID now demonstrates how outstanding performance could be paired with minimal fuel consumption in the future. What is more, this combination need not be confined to the new GLK-Class, which will enter the market in autumn 2008.

Family expansion

The World Premiere of the new Kia pro_cee’d three-door hatchback, at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany 11 September in production form, marks the latest expansion of the popular Kia cee’d family.

Longer, lower and lighter than its five-door hatchback sister car, the three-door pro_cee’d brings more style and more sportiness to the C-segment marketplace and is destined to broaden the appeal of the cee’d to a new group of European consumers and achieve thousands of ‘conquest’ sales for the Kia brand.

“The new Kia pro_cee’d offers consumers sensationally stylish looks with a truly sporty feel to the driving experience, while also retaining most of the attributes of the popular cee’d five-door hatchback – including excellent practicality and versatility,” enthuses Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President Kia Motors Europe.

“With performance, ride and handling that is even more responsive than the five-door, the pro_cee’d will be available with the same wide choice of engines and specifications as its sister car. I think pro_cee’d is truly a great looking car and we know for certain that it will delight existing Kia customers and attract numerous European consumers who find three-door cars particularly attractive and who have not yet considered our brand.”

Despite its sporty appearance and lower roofline, the 4.25-metre long pro_cee’d has an unusually long wheelbase and will offer class-leading passenger and luggage space, plus highly competitive levels of equipment and state-of-the-art active and passive safety. Customers in Europe will be able to choose from a line-up of 19 pro_cee’d cars, with three equipment levels (LX, EX and TX), five engines, with manual or automatic transmissions, and an extensive range of optional equipment (depending on individual markets).

Kia cee’d family – exterior dimensions (mm)

Length Wheelbase Width* Height
Kia cee’d 5-door 4,235 2,650 1,790 1,480
Kia cee’d Sporty Wagon 4,470 2,650 1,790 1,525**
Kia pro_cee’d 4,250 2,650 1,790 1,450

*excluding door mirrors. **including roof rails

Distinctive styling with a cee’d family theme

Thanks to its early conception in the cee’d family creative process, the pro_cee’d has ‘stand-alone’ good looks despite a large degree of commonality with other cee’d models, beneath the exterior skin.

“It is a completely resolved design, with only the bonnet and front wings carried over from the five-door, and features unique exterior panels to create its own distinctive style,” comments Gregory Guillaume, Kia Motors Europe Chief Designer. “We wanted to make pro_cee’d as ‘sporty’ as a cee’d could possibly be, while still remaining a member of our cee’d family.”

Because the Kia cee’d family of three models was conceived simultaneously, the new pro_cee’d three-door hatchback has the same in-depth engineering integrity as the five-door hatchback and the wagon. A total of 15 mm longer than the five-door, the pro_cee’d has longer overhangs – by 10 mm at the front and 5 mm at the rear.

Although the pro_cee’d roofline is 30 mm lower than its hatchback sibling, the 2650 mm wheelbase is retained, so the cabin has most of the cee’d’s proven practicality and versatility, with generous legroom and shoulder room. The new roofline and sloping C-pillar design bring about a small reduction in headroom – down 30 mm in front and 40 mm in the rear, but two 1.70-metre adults can sit comfortably in the rear.

Luggage capacity is also generous for this type of vehicle, totaling 340 litres – loaded up to the bottom of the rear windows and including 55 litres of storage in moulded trays beneath the floor, fitted as standard – just like the hatchback and the Sporty Wagon. The total capacity with the rear seats folded is class-competitive and only slightly down on the five-door cee’d hatchback.

Three models introduce the ‘qualitative revolution’

The launch of the Kia cee’d family (five-door hatchback, five-door Sporty Wagon and three-door pro_cee’d) marks a major turning point in Kia’s history. The bringing of this trio to the marketplace is the start of a new era. They are the first-ever Kia cars designed and manufactured in Europe and are already introducing a qualitative revolution for the brand.

The highest standards of engineering and the European-style aesthetics have been applied to every aspect of the cee’d creative process। Such is the quality and durability of cars manufactured at the new purpose-built Kia factory at Zilina in Slovakia, which every cee’d sold in Europe is backed by a 7-Year/150,000 km warranty.

Kia Unveils 'Kee' Coupe Concept

  • New Kia Kee sports coupe concept heralds a ´new-look´ for Kia
  • Uncluttered, pure and timeless execution represents new Kia ethos
  • 4.3-metre long coupe powered by 200 ps V6 gasoline engine

The World Premiere of the all-new Kia Kee sports coupe concept at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany today is a landmark moment in the Kia Motor Corporation´s evolution into a major global automotive company.

The Kia Kee (pronounced ´key´) is a 4.3-metre long, four-seater, 2-door coupe with svelte, newly proportioned lines resulting from a slightly lengthened greenhouse. It is a new interpretation of a 2+2 coupe with an imposing road presence that demonstrates an uncluttered, pure and timeless execution and represents a new design ethos for Kia.

Designed in Europe, under the guidance of Kia´s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, the sports coupe concept is named Kee for several reasons. "Kee refers to the English word ´key´ as the coupe embodies design elements which will become essential to the future ´look´ of Kia vehicles," explains Schreyer. "The coupe also represents the ´key´ which will open the door to success for our brand and acknowledges the Chinese and Korean word ´Ki´ - the
cultural concept for life-force or spiritual energy."

Kia Kee features a broad stance and a low profile, with unique exterior elements - the strong and powerful frontal design with its distinctive headlamps and eye-catching LED cluster, a dynamic profile with striking greenhouse treatment and 20-inch diameter alloy wheels. Measuring 4,324 mm long, the Kia Kee is powered by a ´next generation´ Mue-II 2-litre, V-6 gasoline engine producing 200 ps, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

"More than any other car-buyer, the sports coupe enthusiast knows instinctively when a car is right," observes Schreyer. "Shape, proportion, stance and both tactile and emotional aspects all add up to a car that stirs the blood. At Frankfurt, Kia is revealing just such a car.

"The Kee is a combination of all of those elements. It is a harmonious blend of everything that sets the sports coupe apart from the more functional vehicle that must undertake a range of activities. The sports coupe is single minded. It is about driving, pure and simple. It is about appearance, performance, emotion," enthuses Schreyer.

Much more than just a svelte, exciting sports coupe concept, the new Kia Kee is also the dawn of a new design language for the Kia brand - a language that will speak to motorists across the world about the Korean company´s intention to become one of the major automotive names over the coming years.

Peter Schreyer and Kia´s Frankfurt-based design team, headed by Gregory Guillaume, set out to make the Kee a landmark car in Kia´s history. It is no coincidence that its name plays on the word ´key´ because that is how essential Kee is to the future of the Kia brand.

Kee embodies Kia´s desire to create a family of cars that will be instantly recognisable on the road and will have simple yet sophisticated appeal in dealer showrooms. Whether wide-eyed admirers of this new generation of vehicles are existing Kia customers - wise to the dramatically improved quality and traditional strong value of the current range - or entirely new audiences, they will immediately recognise a range of cars aimed at those who enjoy driving and seek the perfect machinery to deliver that experience.

"Kee communicates a design language that will be seen on all future Kia products," continued Schreyer. "This language has to be stated in certain elements of the visual representation - lines, shapes, details. And it has to be consistent and easy to understand. It must be visually strong and purposeful but capable of being transferred from this sports coupe concept to a city runabout, a family saloon, a load-lugging MPV or a go-anywhere SUV.

"It was essential Kee should consist of a rhythm of lines - controlled, clean, pure. It had to have good, classic proportions and be well balanced. This is the future for Kia design - it must display the purpose, the function whilst still being capable of delivering an emotional aspiration," added Schreyer.

With its broad stance and low profile, Kee is a new interpretation of a 2+2 coupe, with a simple yet distinctive outline thanks to its long sweeping bonnet, slightly lengthened cabin with striking graphic treatment, sculpted flanks and strong swage lines.

Beneath the powerful and unique appearance are a host of fine details all hinting at the car´s true purpose and harmonising to create a sophisticated design entity. Whether it is the milled aluminium B-pillar visible through the panoramic grey-tinted glass, the distinctively individual 20-inch wheels and hand-cut Continental tyres or the small touches such as the electronic micro-switch door release set into the side-window glass, the clamshell rear hatch opening supported by electronic dampers or the unique front windscreen shape that mirrors so many other details on the Kee, it is clear that this car has been lovingly created by people who care about design.

Inside - Kee looks and feels like a true sports car in which the keen driver will instantly feel comfortable and at ease. The cabin is designed for maximum focus on driving. Clustered directly ahead of the driver, the main dials and controls are simple and straightforward utilising Kia´s new standard red-orange illumination.

Behind the square-bottomed steering wheel are paddles to shift the six-speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox. Instead of a standard gear stick an ergonomically designed lever sits atop the milled aluminium centre console and requires only a nudge forward or backward to select the desired drive mode. The top of the computer mouse-like lever flips up to reveal the electronic starter button.

The design team has concentrated on producing a realistic sports coupe - not a flight of fancy. Every element of the Kia Kee design should be clear, easy to understand and to use. All the main controls are fly-by wire, but their feel in operation has been created to deliver a sense of traditional operation. For example, the toggle switches mounted on the dashboard - echoing the DNA of generations of sports cars - let drivers navigate intuitively through the interface menu of the info-media centre.

After pressing the starter button the driver will immediately recognise the throaty roar of a V6 engine. The next generation 2.7-litre MUE-II engine, produces 200 ps and will deliver instant response, enormous flexibility and scintillating performance on any kind of road.

Kee uses light-weight aluminium or plastic panels and components wherever possible in order to reduce weight and keep the emphasis on rapid and controlled progress that ensures simple fun and driving pleasure. The result is a low kerb weight with excellent balance biased towards the front of this front-wheel drive showcar to deliver neutrally safe handling. Yet Kee could be built with rear wheel drive or even all-wheel-drive allowing Kia to add to its growing range as its brand develops its reputation amongst a more exacting audience.

Salome Etienne, a member of the Kee´s interior design team, comments: "All the main interior surfaces are covered in a semi-suede microfibre material and the body-hugging sports seats use a heard-wearing but distinctive metallic-finish cloth."

Continuing the theme of real-life functionality, the rear of the 2+2 cabin is sufficiently spacious to allow two adult passengers to travel on individual seats in the back of the vehicle whenever necessary. While Kee is not intended to be a regular four-seater, Kia knows that real people have real needs and the brand has no intention of moving into the exotic sports car territory that others so amply fill. And there is even space for a useful amount of luggage!

Raphael Le Masson, from the interior design team stated: "Echoing Kia´s concern for the comfort and convenience of its customers our team sought to ensure that rear passengers will not be confronted with a problem so common in many 2+2 coupes. In Kee, when the rear clamshell hatch is raised the cabin roofliner stays fixed in place to ensure that passengers do not come into contact with the structure of the hatch when it is subsequently closed."

Exterior designer Fabien Coradin observed: "This new concept car is about passion and energy. It is not an act of reason. Buying a sports coupe is an emotional choice and that is reflected in this car. Emotion may not have been the normal reason behind most Kia purchases in the past - now the brand is changing and this car shows the potential for Kia´s future."

Uncluttered, pure and timeless in execution yet modern, effective and usable in purpose, Kee represents a new ethos for Kia. With Kee the entire design team is laying open its mind and its heart. This car stands as a clear indication of Kia´s design philosophy and how it wishes to be viewed - exciting, appealing, creative, aspirational, with products that are beautiful and yet functional, purposeful and realistic.

Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Europe, commented: "This new concept car is a starting point. It shows how we think and what we want to do - appeal to the emotional side of our audience and bring that balance of purpose and emotion into the Kia design language. With Kee we are irrevocably heading off along our chosen path…"

Kee is the first step towards a new family look for Kia vehicles underscored by a focus on distinctive design. Although Kee is primarily a concept vehicle, it is one that could easily go into production should public demand dictate. Kee lays down very clear indications of how Peter Schreyer and his design team intend future Kia vehicles should look and displays elements that its creators will transfer to future production models. Displayed as part of the strong frontal design with its distinctive headlamps and eye-catching LED cluster, the new-style front grille will become the new face of Kia across the product range.

"Kia has given me and our design teams a fantastic opportunity," enthused Schreyer. "Seldom is a designer allowed to shape the entire personality of a brand, given a clean sheet of paper and told to create the future. Kee is the first step on the road and I am so excited about the potential this journey can create."

"Kee is our keystone to the future Kia family we want to create. There is nothing in its design that cannot easily and readily be transferred to production vehicles. There is nothing in Kee that I would not be prepared to see in future production vehicles. This car stands as a clear indication of our philosophy for vehicle design and as a clear signpost to the type of vehicles we shall be bringing to showrooms in the very near future.

"I want motorists to be able to identify Kia cars almost unconsciously. It doesn´t matter what type of vehicle they see - right across the Kia range there should be a very obvious style and image that will encourage drivers to identify with the Kia brand and instantly understand the function of the vehicle at the same time as they are admiring its lines," he added.

The new Kia Kee ultimately serves the Kia brand on a number of fronts. It is a design exercise for a sports coupe model that currently does not feature in the company´s line-up - at present no plans exist to put the Kee into immediate production, but media and public reaction will be closely monitored.

It also allows Schreyer and the entire design team to present their ideas for a family appearance and a design language, to both internal and external audiences. In this respect Kee is the first stage in an on-going process that will be refined and re-examined but will stay true to the core elements of design contained in this car.

Perhaps most importantly Kee is a simple corporate statement to global consumers and to the motoring world that Kia is a brand underpinned with quality and reliability and now on top of that comes the emotional element of distinctive design. The future for Kia products lies in balance, clarity and purpose, and the company´s latest show car embodies that philosophy.

"The new Kia Kee is a clear and emphatic statement that the future of the Kia brand is set to be one that will excite and surprise an entirely new audience of consumers," concluded Peter Schreyer. "In making this design departure for Kia it was essential to my thinking that our sports coupe concept is not simply a flight of fancy but represents an affordable dream for sports car lovers."

Kia Soul Concept

0 评论

Surprise! It's another crossover utility vehicle। This time Kia joins in with the squared-off Soul concept that features the crossover-market's requisite "athletic attitude ... geared toward an active lifestyle." Kia says the Soul concept's styling is based on the chunky design language of the mega-sized Mesa concept from last year's Detroit show. We say it looks like Kia borrowed an early version of Ford's militaristic SYNus concept and just removed the window armor. The Soul is smaller than the Mesa and sports a clever watertight drawer in the back--a place for the active-lifestyle bunch to stow their soaked clothes after a white-water excursion. A large sunroof covering both rows of seats lets the sun shine in on damp adventurers.

The Soul also features front and rear brush guards, suicide doors, and clever interior lighting, along with a laptop computer to make use of the vehicle's wireless internet network and USB ports। Power for Kia's foxy box comes from a banal 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that sends power to the front wheels through a five-speed manu-matic transmission. The homonymous name is a cheesy way of indicating that the concept was designed partly in Kia's home city of Seoul, South Korea--and that it tries to evoke a bit of James Brown style. The Soul is a cool little box full of hip features, and hopefully Kia will "get up offa that thing" and build it.
