2008 Lotus Exige GT3 Making Race Debut In Australia

Coming this weekend to the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix is an updated Lotus Exige GT3. Even more powerful than last year's Lotus GT3 concep, the world's fastest Lotus has a highly specialized 1.8-liter engine spawned from the stock engine in the Exige S.

Readying the Exige for competition in the 2008 GT Championship was no easy task, with engineers and mechanics repeatedly working 20 hour days during the off season. Previous upgrades to the car have included major tuning to the engine, boosting power output to 261kw and 305NM. Engineers have been focusing on reducing drag for the newly-freshened '08 model. The new "extreme aerodynamic aids" should prove to be effective, with a Lotus press release mentioning that every 0.007Cd reduction of drag coefficient adds 1.6 kmh to the car's speed.

Models of the Exige have seen their front sections increased, with front radiator inlets and outlets meant to offset the effects of the longer and wider panels. The nose has also been extended by 3cm. Lotus' racer looks more like a fastback now, with rear body parts extended a full 8cm rearward, are widened by 10cm, and shortened by 3cm.

Angelo Lazaris will drive the Lotus Exige GT3 in his second racing season. The Exige GT3 will be introduced to the public during round three of the GT Championship, being held this weekend.
